Modernism and Postmodernism In Movie Titled Lucy
My name is Lenno Albion From Indonesian Computer University. This is my explanation about modernism and posmodernism.
Modernism is a concept related to human relation with the surrounding environment in modern times. The concept of modernism encompasses many science and each of these field has a debate about what is it. Modernism is generally seen as an individual and group reaction to the modern world, and is considered a world that is influenced by the practices and theories of capitalism, industrialism, and the nation-state.
Postmodernism is a 20th century movement in art, architecture, and criticism which continues modernism. Postmodernism includes skeptical interpretations of culture, literature, art, philosophy, and others. Postmodernism often associated with deconstruction because its use as a term gained significant popularity at the same time. Postmodernism is a concept that developed after the era of modernism. Postmodernism is not a single understanding or a theory, but rather an umbrella of various theories that are scattered and difficult to find a single common ground.
The emergence of postmodernism can be related from modernism itself. Word modernism contains all meaning forward and progressive, it always promises us to bring change to more established world will be fulfilled. Rationality will be help us deal with myths and beliefs traditional unfounded, make people helpless in facing in the world (Maksum, 2014: 309). However, modernism has a dark side to it cause human life to lost they orientation. Said by Max Horkheimer, Ardono that enlightenment gave birth to oppression and domination besides also giving birth to progress.
The advantages of postmodernism can make sensitive to the possibility that the big discourse is positive, ethical principles positive, can be rotated and used to oppress humans. Postmodernism has a positive aspects (Franz Dahler), is openness to diversity of society, to tolerance, resistance to monopoly, dominant religion. While weakness of it is very enthusiastic postmodernism promoting small narratives, turns out to be blind to reality that many small narratives a lot of decay. Second, postmodernism does not distinguish between ideologies, in one parties and universal principles of open ethics, on the other hand. And then, postmodernism demands to get rid of big stories for the sake of small or local stories.
In my opinion, I am modernism because I still live realistically, not floating, not too far in the future about the world or technology, and more importantly, still believe in religion and God. There may be a bit of postmodernism when imagining something that is excessive trying to realize something such as a kind of super sophisticated money technology, and the use of language that has unclear meaning that is not clear from where, such as “skuy” “santuy”. However, every human being at this time must have the concept of postmodernism, where with the advancement of technology today makes humans want to explore deeper, both in terms of technology, art, education, and others. With the actual concept of postmodernism is a correction of modernism to provide a new thought and solution and view of science.
The film that I will discuss in my essay is Lucy’s sci-fi action film released in 2014. Why I want to discuss this film because there are many interesting things in this film that are very related to postmodernism. The film, starring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman, was directed by Luc Besson and produced by his own wife Virgine Besson-Silla. Lucy is the name of the first woman from Darwin’s theory of evolution, whose film tells “if” humans controlled 100% of their brainpower, this film talks about the life philosophy of a scientist.
This film tells the story of an American woman who studies in Taipei, Taiwan. Then he was tricked by his own girlfriend by lure to get the same results in the form of money. In fact, the contents of the suitcase were in the form of a new drug at the time called CPH4 in collaboration with a Korean gangster named Mr. Jang In this film, the woman named Lucy is an innocent woman who does not know about the world of drugs, she is forced to distribute the drug to European countries such as France, Rome, Spain, and Germany. The team from Mr. Jang and The man succeeded in sedating Lucy and putting the bag of drugs into the stomach that was just below Lucy’s intestine.
At first Lucy did not feel out of place with a bag of drugs in her stomach. At the time of captivity, there was a man guarding Lucy in a place of detention, the man wanted to harass Lucy, but Lucy fought and pushed the man, finally the man got angry and kicked Lucy in the stomach where the drug bag was hidden and the bag was spread and the drugs spread all over Lucy’s inner body. And there was absorption of the drug into Lucy’s body which made her have power. His personality becomes very sharp and dark and also has no emotions. After killing the thieves, he immediately headed to the hospital to take the drug bag out of his possession. CPH4 is a volatile substance that is produced in minutes by pregnant women who will provide energy to the developing fetus.
This is a first picture or scene where the part embraces the concept of postmodernism in which those who take the drug seem to gain strength beyond human comprehension, that is the power in the use of the whole brain which even though scientists cannot use it all by themselves. brain capacity, which also means humans who are brought in want to try sensations, it’s not wrong that many people who want to use drugs on the grounds want to relax their body and are curious about what will happen next to their body. However, most people use it incorrectly, which can even cause death, like in movies when Lucy has reached 100% control of her brain, it disappears and becomes hardware as a flash. Before reaching 100%, but before reaching it, he must go through some strange things. The reality described above is in the real world.
And this second picture or scene is the power of a time travel, which is very postmodernist in nature. The picture above tells about when Lucy had almost mastered her brain by 100%, when almost mastering all the capacity of the brain, Lucy suddenly explored the entire civilization of the earth to the past only by waving her hand to the right, she tried to look at the past before the existence of the modern world and sophisticated, until he arrived in ancient times, he met a monkey but had a brain like a human who is also named Lucy, he was the first human in the world in the story, when Lucy put her index finger with the monkey, he returned to the time he lived. But, by that time he had reached his limit and disappeared, he left the flashdisk to the scientists he believed the contents of the flash was most likely a very sophisticated technology that was very useful for these scientists in the future. From this picture it can also be interpreted that humans in this age want to try time travel, even there is already a tool to time travel, but it cannot yet be recognized and only becomes a theory. However, many people claim to have done the time travel even though the truth is still doubtful. The reality in the picture above is in the real world, but there is a shift of times due to time travel.
The last picture or scene above is the part where postmodernism takes the form of technology. Here it is told that Lucy has mastered her brain as much as 60%, which makes it easy for the police to catch the remaining drug bags in the bodies of other drug dealers. It is strength is in the form of technological sophistication in itself so that what is in the world of communication can be controlled and heard in the form of a network like the picture above. From this picture, humans are very eager to create technology in the form of exactly the same thing as in film as a small example of making holograms that will facilitate human communication. The reality in the above scene is in the real world.
So the conclusion that I can gather from this film is the many elements related to postmodernism in the form of concepts of thought and in the form of concepts of aspects of life, such as having more power that contradicts the concept of nature and God, from that film humans can dream about something happened in the film. With this film, it becomes a guide for humans to do it to a real concept even though it requires a long process and time and there is no certainty that it will happen.
Thankyou..
